England international Harry Brook has apologized after being involved in an altercation with a nightclub bouncer the night before a one-day international on New Zealand’s pre-Ashes tour.
A report in The Telegraph revealed that Brook, England’s white-ball captain, was beaten by a bouncer after being refused entry to the clubhouse the night before the third ODI in Wellington.
Brook, who is also vice-captain of England’s Test team, has avoided being stripped of the white-ball job but has been fined nearly £30,000 and is on final warning for his future behaviour.
The revelation comes at the end of England’s 4-1 defeat in Australia, a tour that was marred by accusations of poor team culture, including players drinking heavily while on holiday in Noosa.
“I want to apologize for my actions,” Brock said in a statement. “I fully accept that my behavior was wrong and caused embarrassment to me and the England team.
“Representing England is the greatest honor of all and I take it very seriously and I am deeply sorry that I have let my team-mates, coaches and fans down. I have thought about the lessons you have taught me about responsibility, professionalism and the standards expected of those who represent your country.
“I am determined to learn from this mistake and rebuild trust through my future actions, both on and off the field. I apologize unreservedly and will work hard to ensure this does not happen again.”
A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board said: “We are aware of this incident and it has been dealt with through a formal and confidential ECB disciplinary process. The player concerned has apologized and acknowledged that his behavior fell below expectations on this occasion.”
