Ashley Cole, the former Arsenal and Chelsea defender, took over as coach of Cesena, which plays in Serie B, until the end of the current season.

The 45-year-old, who participated in 107 matches with the England national team, retired from playing in 2019 after a period with Derby before moving to coaching.

Cole has been on the staff of Derby, Everton, Birmingham and England, but this will be his first role as a manager.

The club said: “The entire Cesena family is delighted to welcome coach Ashley Cole to lead the Bianconeri’s first team, warmly welcomes him and his staff to Cesena, and wishes them good luck in this new adventure.”

Cole enjoyed a highly successful career on the pitch, winning 13 domestic trophies, including three Premier League titles, seven FA Cups, a League Cup, a Champions League and a Europa League.

He left Chelsea to join Roma in 2014 and made 16 appearances for the Serie A club.

Cesena occupies eighth place in the Italian Second Division after failing to win any of its last seven matches, losing four and drawing three.
