However, this second test created another special moment.

“The best part was meeting the queen,” says Agar. “Michael Clarke introduced her to everyone and we had to address her as ‘Your Majesty’.

“She came up to me and shook my hand and said, ‘This is your first time here, isn’t it?’ I said: He is.

“Good luck, have a good time,” she said. I couldn’t believe it. “The Queen knew it was me.”

Agar was “relieved” to be dropped after the second Test. The third, at Old Trafford, was the start of Lyon’s 100th successive Tests. Agar, now 32, played three more Tests, none of them in the Ashes.

Hughes, Agar’s batting partner that day in Nottingham, was killed on the field just over a year later, taking a fatal blow to the neck in a Sheffield Shield match.

“I feel very lucky to have shared that with him,” says Agar. “I had a picture of Phil on my bedroom wall, playing one of his signature takes. My brothers and I loved Phil.

“I was fighting with someone I looked up to. Sharing one of the biggest moments of my life so far, learning about resilience and staying present and what that does in terms of performance is a big lesson.

“He showed me that in real time. It was a special time we had together. He was a lovely man.”

Two days after Hughes’ death in November 2014, Agar was playing in Perth for his club University.

He’s been out for 98.

“It was actually scary,” Agar says. “There was a big number 408, his hat number, drawn on the ground and there was a minute of silence. It was difficult.

“I remember feeling very focused. I was thinking about our roles, and what he was telling me at the time. In the 98th minute, the ball came off the ball for the second time. It was nice to have it happen that way.”

98. The number that will forever be remembered for Agar’s Ashes career.

“I never thought about the two rounds I didn’t get,” Agar says.

“The feeling for me has never changed. It has never been regret or disappointment.

“I’m really happy with what happened that day.”
