Italian Sinner warned that Alex de Minaur “doesn’t have much to lose” in the semi-final.
Sinner advanced to the semifinals without dropping a set or a service game, displaying his clinical touch against Shelton by converting two of his three break point opportunities in the first set and winning the tiebreaker on his second match point.
Efficient with his serve throughout the match, he closed out Shelton’s only break point – he had now saved all eight points he faced in Turin – and gave up just seven points in six service games in the second set.
The 24-year-old, who is bidding for a third successive final appearance in the season-ending final, has a 12-0 record against seventh seed De Minaur, but is unwilling to underestimate the Australian, who upset Taylor Fritz to clinch second place in Jimmy Connors’ group.
“I’m very happy to [De Minaur]“Props to him for coming back with that performance,” Sinner said [against Fritz]. It’s one of the best games I’ve ever seen him play.
“I have to be very careful, he doesn’t have much to lose. It’s going to be very difficult.”
In doubles, Henry Patten and his Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara won 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2 over Marcelo Arevalo and Mati Pavic, meaning there will be five British players in the semi-finals, the largest number of players from one country since 1992.
British duo Joe Salisbury and Neil Skupski, who have already qualified, maintained their perfect record with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Christian Harrison and Evan King and will face British nationals and year-end leaders Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool in the semi-finals.
