Medvedev, a former world number one, started the 2025 season ranked fifth in the world rankings but fell to 18th in a turbulent year.
In addition to the broken webcam, Medvedev also suffered a collapse in New York after a photographer entered the stadium during the match.
He ended a title drought by winning the Almaty Open in October for his first title in 882 days, but missed the season-ending ATP Finals in November in Turin for the top eight.
He said, “What happened last year happened and that’s okay. It’s part of professional life and part of life.”
“I was able to finish the year at 12 or 13, which is great for a lot of players.
“Of course, I wasn’t happy.”
The 29-year-old said that his suffering last season was due to his mental outlook on the field, not his physical condition.
Medvedev said: “In my tennis practice, I did not feel good sometimes.
“It’s not easy, because you wonder, why isn’t my backhand going down the line well? Why isn’t my serve going well?”
“Mentally, you start to put pressure on yourself and you start to be a little more nervous during games.”
After a first-round exit at the US Open, Medvedev parted ways with coach Gil Cervara after more than eight years of working together.
He has added Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzky to his squad, a lineup that appears to be working well for Medvedev, given the two titles they have won since teaming up.
He added: “I feel great with my new team, so I don’t go back much to the past.”
The 11th seed, who twice failed to serve against De Jong before prevailing after two hours and 53 minutes, will face Quentin Hales of France in the next match.
Russian Andrey Rublev also qualified by defeating Italian Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.
However, British third seed Jacob Fearnley was defeated 7-6 (7-2), 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) by Poland’s Kamel Majchrzak.
Edinburgh-born Fearnley suffered a bizarre fall during the fourth set and received some treatment on his thigh.
