Six-time major champion Iga Swiatek said players are being watched “like animals in a zoo” by cameras backstage at the Australian Open.

Coco Gauff was caught smashing her racket in a corridor in the players’ area at Melbourne Park on Tuesday, prompting the American to call for more privacy.

The Australian Open has shown footage of the players’ area in the bowels of Rod Laver Arena – which includes the gym, warm-up area and corridor leading to the locker room – since 2019.

Access to the camera is more restricted in other disciplines.

“Are we tennis players or are we animals in the zoo where they are watched even when they defecate?” said Polish Swiatek, who lost in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Semi-finalist Jessica Pegula described the constant filming as an “invasion of privacy” that should be “minimised”.

The American added: “You feel like you are constantly under a microscope.”

Tournament organisers, Tennis Australia, told BBC Sport the cameras are being used to help create a “deeper connection” between fans and players.

“Achieving the right balance between showcasing players’ personalities and skills, while ensuring their comfort and privacy is a priority,” the statement read.
