Two-time champion Naomi Osaka withdrew from her third-round match at the Australian Open shortly before she was scheduled to play against qualifier Madison Inglis.

Japan’s Osaka (28 years old) suffered a left abdominal injury due to her withdrawal.

The announcement came about two hours before the duo was expected to take to Rod Laver Arena for Saturday night’s session.

“I had to make the difficult decision to withdraw to address something my body needed to take care of after my last match,” 16th seed Osaka wrote on Instagram.

“I was so excited to keep going and this race meant a lot to me, so stopping here breaks my heart, but I can’t risk causing any more damage until I can get back in the field.”

Inglis (28 years old) is ranked 168th in the world and is moving to the fourth round in one of the four major tournaments for the first time in her career.

After the Australian Tennis Federation missed her due to a wild card, she qualified for three qualifying rounds and will now face Polish second seed Iga Swiatek or Russian Anna Kalinskaya, seeded 31, for a place in the quarter-finals.
