Novak Djokovic’s hopes of winning a record 25th Grand Slam title have been boosted after his fourth-round opponent Jakub Mencic withdrew from the Australian Open with an abdominal injury.

Djokovic was scheduled to face the 20-year-old Czech player during Monday evening’s session in Melbourne, but will now qualify directly to the quarter-finals.

He will face Italian Lorenzo Musetti, seeded fifth, or American Taylor Fritz, seeded ninth, in the quarter-finals.

If the rest of the draw goes with the seeding, the 38-year-old Serbian could face Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals and world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

His most recent Grand Slam success came at the 2023 US Open and he is currently tied with Margaret Court on 24 major titles.

Djokovic, who has yet to drop a set at this year’s Australian Open, has been eliminated in the semifinals at all four Grand Slams in 2025.

Speaking after his third round win over Boteach van de Zandschulp on Saturday, he said: “[I feel] Really good. It was a great start to the tournament.

“Obviously things can change. I’m not getting ahead of myself because I learned a lesson last year.

“I got really fired up very early in some Grand Slams, played very well and got to the quarter-finals and semi-finals, and then I got injured in three out of four last year.”
