Australian Open 2026 results: Aryna Sabalenka faces Iva Jovic in the quarter-finals

Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, seeded 12th, qualified for the quarter-finals with Coco Kauf, seeded third in the world, after her 6-2, 6-4 victory over Russian Mira Andreeva, seeded eighth.

Svitolina felt that she had to “fight until the last point” in a “nerve-wracking” match, even though she controlled the decisive moments.

The 31-year-old broke Andreeva’s serve in three consecutive games in the first set and also saved seven break points out of a possible nine, including three in the second set, to avoid losing a double serve.

Svitolina, a four-time Australian Open quarterfinalist, has a nine-match winning streak in 2026 and has lost six or fewer games in three of her four matches in Melbourne.

Gauff safely qualified to the quarter-finals in Melbourne for the third year in a row after defeating Czech Karolina Muchova, seeded 19th.

The third seed in the world won the first set, but Muchova fell behind in the second set before Gauff held her nerve to win 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 on the fourth point to decide the match.

Gauff, a two-time major champion, went on to win all four tournaments in which she faced Muchova – including the 2023 US Open.

However, she never reached the final in Melbourne.

Speaking after her victory, Gauff credited “self-confidence” for her reaching the quarter-finals.

She said: “My history was difficult with my serve, but I think today was great. There was one lost serve in the second set, but after that it was very good.”

“That’s the biggest thing, just believing in myself and knowing that I’ve put in the work on the field and knowing that will show in games.

Gauff then wrote “Confidence is key” on the camera lens after the win, improving her head-to-head record with Muchova to 5-0.
