Austrian Open: Cameron Norrie was defeated by Matteo Berrettini in a thrilling match

Cameron Norrie, ranked second in Britain, was eliminated from the Austrian Open by Italian Matteo Berrettini in a thrilling round of 16 match.

The world number 59 defeated Nouri in three hours and 16 minutes, winning 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (9-11), 6-4 in Vienna.

Nouri squandered a 4-1 lead in the first set, and was punished in the tie-break, giving Berrettini the lead.

The second set was tougher, as both players held serve throughout the match.

The Italian player wasted the match point in the tie-break, as Nouri had his fourth chance to settle the match to equalize.

But the 30-year-old was unable to capitalize on his momentum in the deciding set, and Berrettini broke his opponent’s serve in the ninth game to swing the match in his favour.

Berrettini (29 years old) will face the third seed and the seventh seed in the world, Alex de Minaur, in the next round, after the Australian player won 6-4, 6-4 over Filip Misoc.

Italian Jannik Sinner, ranked second in the world, defeated his compatriot Flavio Copoli 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

German Alexander Zverev, ranked third in the world, also qualified by defeating Italian Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 6-4.

But four days after his 882-day wait for a title ended, Russian Daniil Medvedev lost 7-6 (7-3) and 6-4 to Frenchman Corentin Moutet – his opponent in the final of the Almaty Open on Sunday.
