✅ Main takeaway:

Avatar video The game is better than the movies.

I say this as someone who has been a fan of James Cameron’s Avatar films for a long time. The 2009 original was my first midnight screening, which I attended with a friend who sat in the theater shirtless, his entire body painted blue. I can’t forget that experience, or the nearly three-hour bioluminescent journey that followed, and the series has kept me hooked ever since.

People talk a lot about Avatar. They find the film’s plots derivative, the characters forgettable, and the running times almost inhumanly long. (The third movie Avatar: Fire and Ashes, It’s out now and has a running time of 3 hours and 15 minutes, not including previews.)

Those criticisms are fair. True, even. But the real Avatar Sickos (hello) might be wondering: What if that experience were longer, in reality? What if you could spend even more Do you spend time trekking through the sprawling, glowing forests of a green alien moon? If this sounds appealing, boy, would you be excited to hear about the concept of video games?

Avatar: The Frontiers of Pandoraa game developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft in 2023, lets you fly in the form of 10-foot-tall Na’vi, a tribal species that lives on the alien moon Pandora.

While the Avatar films were huge hits and box office hits, the game was released to little fanfare and average reviews, though it became a sleeper hit. It has since gained enough of a fan base that it has received significant updates in the two years since its debut, including downloadable content expansions and a free mode that switches the game’s first-person view to a third-person view, allowing players to enjoy all the big blue for their character. New DLC story titled From the asheswas released today, the same day as the third film in the series.

The game may be the best thing to ever happen to the Avatar series. Where movies have their own stories to tell (family, love, that sort of thing), the game plays very differently with your own custom Na’vi.

It’s a true simulation of eco-terrorism wrapped in the most beautiful botanical garden you’ve ever seen. Your huge blue tree is about a world where all the beautiful plants want to kill you. Your mission is to stab weak human colonists with your oversized spears. By eliminating the bad guys and demolishing their camps that spread pollution into the air and water, you can allow the world’s foliage to grow again in its place. (Don’t feel bad for humans. They’re sad, angry creatures, and I’d kill thousands of them if I made a beautiful forest look a little prettier.) Then spend all the downtime you want just in the verdant paradise of Pandora, jumping across neon lily pads and running through spiraling, walking plants. Thump It shrinks into the ground when you touch it.
