The first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday has been released online giving a look at Marvel’s big-budget hope.

β€œThere’s something coming, something we may not be able to stop,” is the first line heard in the new preview that continues to bring back multiple characters from different Marvel movies and universes.

Returning Avengers featured in the trailer include Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, and Chris Evans as Captain America, while Fantastic Four’s Pedro Pascal, X-Men’s Patrick Stewart, Black Panther’s Letitia Wright, and Thunderbolts’ Florence Pugh also appear.

There’s also a glimpse of Ian McKellen, who returns as Magneto, who recently spoke about the film at the Piazza Festival in Rome. “At one point they pushed me to destroy New Jersey,” the actor told the audience. He added that the directing duo, the Russo Brothers, “asked me to look angrier: Make it look like you hate what you’re destroying. So I stood there and shouted: Mar-a-Lago!”

The trailer teases an “unimaginable resolution” as well as the arrival of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. The actor, who previously played Iron Man, returns to play the iconic villain in a move that is said to earn the actor an estimated $100 million for both Doomsday and its follow-up Secret Wars.

Returning co-director Joe Russo said they are “back to phase zero” of the MCU with the new film. β€œThis is starting from scratch,” he added. β€œWe want to make sure everyone feels like this isn’t based on anything from the past.”

The film comes at a difficult time for Marvel, which was once the box office champion but is now struggling to return to its former glories. The past few years have seen adventures like Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Captain America: Brave New World achieve modest results.

But in 2019, Avengers: Endgame became one of the highest-grossing films of all time with a box office total of around $2.8 billion.

β€œThe success or failure of this upcoming superhero could decide the future of the entire franchise,” The Guardian’s Ben Child recently wrote.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on December 18, the same release date as Dune: Part Three, which leading box office critics are predicting a Barbenheimer-style showdown.
