✅ **What You’ll Learn**:

Hollywood’s A-listers will gather this weekend for the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, a night that will reveal where this year’s Oscars race is headed.

Nominees for the film awards include stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Michael B. Jordan and Ariana Grande, while small screen nominees include Helen Mirren, Jenna Ortega, Jude Law and Glen Powell.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic comedy-thriller One Battle After Another leads with nine nominations and already looks like this season’s favorite. It was named best picture of the year by the New York and Los Angeles critics’ circles as well as the National Board of Review and Gotham Awards and at last week’s Critics’ Choice Awards.

This week saw nominations announced for the Screen Actors Guild’s newly renamed Actors Awards, and she also leads the field with seven nods.

The film, with an estimated budget of about $130 million, tells the story of an elderly revolutionary, DiCaprio, who struggles with his past that comes back to haunt him. In his five-star review, Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian described it as “thrilling and bewildering”.

“This is the best time I’ve ever had making a movie and I feel like it shows,” Anderson said on stage at the Critics’ Choice Awards. “It’s just a testament to being with the people you love.”

Anderson has yet to win a Golden Globe or an Academy Award for his previous work, but is expected to win best director on Sunday.

But while DiCaprio has received praise for his role, and received his 15th Golden Globe nomination, he is expected to miss the win. Chalamet will likely take home the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his role in Marty Supreme.

The 30-year-old actor, who has previously been nominated for roles such as Wonka and Call Me By Your Name, was front and center in the extensive promotional campaign, helping the film gross $60 million at the global box office in less than a month. It has already beaten Civil War to become A24’s biggest film at the UK box office.

Chalamet was vocal about his desire to win an Oscar on his recent press tour, calling this his best performance yet.

“People can call me ‘hardworking,’ and they can say anything,” he said in an interview with Vogue magazine. “But I’m the one actually doing it here.”

Some expected him to win last year for the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, but he lost to Adrien Brody from The Brutalist. While the Academy Awards have often chosen not to reward young actors (the last Best Actor Under 40 winner was Eddie Redmayne in 2014), the Golden Globes have not had the same problem. Recent winners who did not go on to receive Oscars include Austin Butler, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Taron Egerton, and Andrew Garfield.

Perhaps the only sure-fire winner this weekend is Irish actress Jessie Buckley, who is poised to take home her first Golden Globe for her role in “Hamnet,” Chloe Zhao’s adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell, directed by Chloe Zhao and produced by Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes. She plays Shakespeare’s grieving wife in a largely fictionalized version of the events surrounding Hamlet’s creation and the death of their son. Paul Mescal plays the playwright.

Buckley, 36, who originally rose to fame as a contestant on BBC reality competition show I’d Do Anything before breaking out in hit musical drama Wild Rose, became a mother after filming Hamnet.

“Losing your child is an unimaginable prospect that I cannot fathom,” she said in a recent interview. “There’s nothing beyond what she should feel, and she’s been through it all.”

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian praised Buckley’s performance as “unconsciously beguiling” in a five-star review.

Both Chalamet and Buckley won Critic Choice Awards last weekend. Last year’s acting award winners Adren Brody and Demi Moore both won Golden Globes.

“Hamnet” is also a strong possibility in the best motion picture, drama category, but it could be won by Ryan Coogler’s blockbuster “Sinners,” which has seven nominations.

The $368 million smash hit could lead star Michael B. Jordan to become only the fourth Black actor to win in the Best Actor in a Drama category, and Coogler to become the first Black director to ever win.

“The biggest lesson for me, it may sound corny, but the biggest lesson is how much I love my job,” Coogler told The Associated Press. “Professionally, I’m married to film, and this movie was a renewal of my vows, if that makes sense.”

Both Sinners and One Battle After Another are Warner Bros. films, the result of a bold, auteur-led slate for the studio. As the end of the year approached, news emerged that Netflix was in the running for ownership. This season has seen some of the biggest awards nominees, from Jay Kelly to A House of Dynamite, fail to register with voters.

The evening will once again be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, who received praise for her role last year. The often-raucous showdown, known for roasting celebrities, said there was one star who refused to be mocked.

“I try to do my monologues in L.A., and in the clubs here, and even any joke about Julia Roberts, she’s not there for it,” she said in an interview with CBS. “You can’t make fun of America’s sweetheart. So whatever I’m going to say about her at the end of the day, it’s the most subtle joke I’ve ever worked on, because she’s so sensitive.”

This year’s Academy Awards nominations are scheduled to be revealed on January 22. It was announced last month that the awards will be broadcast on YouTube starting in 2029.
