Scorecard
Bangladesh wrapped up a comprehensive win in the first Test over Ireland in Sylhet by an innings and 47 runs.
The tourists started the fourth day in an inauspicious position at 86-5 in the second over – still facing a 215-run deficit, but fighting back to make the hosts bat again.
However, Bangladesh continued to take Irish wickets and registered a crushing win after lunch.
The second match of the two-Test series begins in Dhaka on Wednesday – and Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie said his side must be “better for a while longer”.
“It was tough for us,” the 34-year-old Dubliner said.
“Bangladesh were better than us in every aspect of the game. They showed us how to score big in the first innings and we were always on the defensive.
“What we wanted to do was fight as long as possible and I think we showed that in glimpses, but if we want to compete a little better, we have to be better for a longer period.”
Andy McBrien led the charge on Friday with his fifth Test half-century which moved him into second place in the Irish men’s Test run-scorer list to complete his status as the highest-scoring Test bowler.
McBrien survived some concerns when he was dealt in successive balls that were overturned on review, but made a confident save as Ireland reached lunch.
Matthew Humphreys had earlier scored with 16, before McBrien and Balbirnie produced a 66-run stand – with the captain moved down the order to allow his injured finger to rest.
However, Balbirnie was out lbw to test debutant Hassan Murad who then caught McBrain off the bowling of Nahid Rana.
Ninth-ranked Jordan Neil added 36 before he was dismissed by Murad for his fourth wicket of the innings, while Taijul Islam sealed victory for the home side by removing Barry McCarthy for 25 as Ireland were all out for 254.
“We are aware how good the Bangladesh team is in their own circumstances and their skills, they are really good, but our players will show fight,” Balbirnie added.
“From a skills point of view, we have to get there as soon as possible, and that will come by playing as many games as possible in these testing conditions.
He added: “I’m really proud of the way we did the last four days, but we want to be better in the next match.”
