📌 **What You’ll Learn**:
“Battle After Battle” and “Teenage” led this year’s Golden Globes with four wins each.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s counterculture epic won Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. It also won Best Director and Screenplay, his first ever Golden Globe win.
“I love doing what I do, so this is just fun,” Anderson said in his second speech before paying tribute to the late Adam Sumner, who was an assistant director on the film before his death in November 2024.
Teyana Taylor also took home the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, beating out Amy Madigan and Ariana Grande. In a tearful speech, she dedicated her award “to my black sisters and the little black girls watching tonight,” adding: “We belong in every room we enter. Our voices matter and our dreams deserve space.”
Netflix’s hit series Smash, Adolescent, continued its awards sweep, taking home four global awards, including Best Limited Series. In his acceptance speech, writer Jack Thorne said the show was not intended to criticize young people but rather “the filth and debris we put in their path.”
Stephen Graham took home the award for Outstanding Actor in a Limited Series, beating out Jude Law and Paul Giamatti, while Owen Cooper followed up his historic Emmy win with another Outstanding Supporting Actor award. Standing on the Golden Globes stage “doesn’t feel real at all,” he said. Erin Doherty also won her support for the actress.
The Shakespearean fantasy drama Hamnet won Best Motion Picture and Best Actress in a Drama for Jessie Buckley. Steven Spielberg, who produced the film alongside Sam Mendes, accepted the award and said that Chloe Zhao was the only director who could have made the film.
“This is a true honour,” Buckley, whose competitors included Julia Roberts and Jennifer Lawrence, said in her speech: “I love what I do and I love being part of this industry.”
Ryan Coogler’s horror film Sinners won awards for original soundtrack, cinematic achievement and box office. “I just want to thank the audience for coming,” Coogler said in his speech.
Timothée Chalamet took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy for his role in Ping Pong Marty Supreme, beating out Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney. It was his first Golden Globe win, and he talked about how losing his previous four awards made this moment “so much sweeter.” He is now the youngest winner in this category.
The Brazilian thriller The Secret Agent also won two awards: for Best Non-English Language Film and for star Wagner Moura, who won Best Leading Actor in a Drama. By defeating Michael B. Jordan and Dwayne Johnson, he became the first Brazilian winner in this category. Director Kleber Mendonça Filho said in his speech: “This is a very important time and moment for filmmaking.”
Rose Byrne was named Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy for her role as a spiraling mother in the disturbing indie film, If I Had Legs to Kick You. She beat out Emma Stone and Cynthia Erivo to win and thanked voters for rewarding a small film that she joked was made for $8.50.
Stellan Skarsgård beat out Jacob Elordi and Benicio del Toro to win supporting actor in the Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value. He joked that he was surprised to win because he is old. At the end of his speech, he said about the importance of the theatrical experience: “Cinema should be watched in cinemas.”
While bigger bets on films like Train Dreams, Frankenstein and Jay Kelly failed to win, Netflix took home two awards for its summer hit KPop: Demon Hunters. The film, which is now the most-watched film of all time on the platform, won Golden for Animated Feature and Original Song. The adventure was originally created by Sony but was released on Netflix through a first-look rights deal.
It’s been a big year for new TV shows, with new seasons of The Pitt, The Studio and Pluribus all winning awards.
“The Pitt Hospital” series won the award for best drama series, against “Severance,” “Slow Horses,” and “The Diplomat.” Noah Wyle also took home the award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, beating out Gary Oldman and Mark Ruffalo, and used his speech to thank health care workers.
Apple’s new industrial comedy series The Studio also won best comedy series, with its star and creator Seth Rogen winning best actor in a comedy series, beating out Martin Short and Steve Martin.
Rhea Seehorn won Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for the first season of Apple’s hit series Pluribus. She thanked the show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, for “the role of a lifetime.”
Jean Smart won Best Actress in a Television Series Musical or Comedy for the third time for her performance in the hit HBO series Hacks. “What can I say, I’m a greedy bitch,” she joked in her speech. She wore a “Be Well” pin on her clothing to show support for the ACLU-endorsed campaign against the use of violence by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Mark Ruffalo and Wanda Sykes were also among the names seen with “ICE OUT” pins to protest the death of Renee Goode, an unarmed woman who was killed in Minneapolis.
“The only thing that matters is his morals, but the guy is a convicted felon or a convicted rapist,” Ruffalo said of Donald Trump on the red carpet. “He’s a pedophile. He’s the worst human being. If we were to rely on this man’s morals for the most powerful country in the world, we would all be in a lot of trouble.”
Other winners included Michelle Williams for her role in the limited series Dying for Sex and Ricky Gervais for his performance in stand-up comedy on television. Gervais was not in attendance, so host Wanda Sykes jokingly accepted the award and dedicated the win to “God and the trans community” on his behalf.
Host Nikki Glaser returned for the second year in a row, jokingly calling the Globes “undoubtedly the most important thing happening in the world right now.” As the ceremony aired on CBS, she made jokes about Barry Weiss’s new role at CBS News, calling it “the newest place in America to watch CBS News.” She also targeted the lack of film and television production in Los Angeles, the redacting of the Epstein files, Leonardo DiCaprio’s penchant for dating younger women, and Sean Penn’s development into a “sexy leather handbag.”
The night also marked the first-ever Globe for Best Podcast, which was announced after a skit parodying podcasting, with Glaser playing Nicole Kidman in the AMC ad that went viral. The winner was Good Hang with Amy Poehler beating Call Her Daddy and SmartLess. “I don’t know about award ceremonies, but when they are done properly,” she joked.
Nominated shows and films that left the night empty-handed include Frankenstein, Nobody Wants This, The Diplomat, Bad Guys: For Good, Jay Kelly, Bear, Abbott Elementary, Murder Only on the Block and Pogonia.
Last year saw major winners including Demi Moore, Adrien Brody, Kieran Culkin, The Brutalist, Emilia Perez and Shogun.
This year’s Academy Awards nominations will be announced on January 22, and the ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 15.
