Bayern Munich: 16-year-old Leonard Prescott may have to play in goal in the Champions League

Bayern Munich could give 16-year-old goalkeeper Leonard Prescott his first-team debut in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The German giants have three goalkeepers suffering from injury, and if Jonas Orbig fails to recover from concussion, Prescott will play in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie against Atalanta, coach Vincent Kompany said.

Orbig suffered an injury during Bayern’s 6-1 victory in Italy last week, while Manuel Neuer, as a starter, is working to regain full fitness after suffering a muscle tear, and third goalkeeper Sven Ulreich suffered a connective muscle injury during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

“Jonas trained normally today [Tuesday]. “The decision tomorrow will be medical,” Kompany said.

“If things go well, Orbig will be in goal. If not, we will have to find another solution.”

Prescott, a German youth international who plays for Bayern’s under-19 team, will need permission from German labor authorities to work in the evenings because he is a teenager.

He has been on Bayern’s bench for the past two matches with fellow young goalkeeper Leon Clanack, 19, also missing with a thigh injury.

Back-up goalkeeper Janis Barthel, 19, has featured on Bayern’s bench in two Bundesliga matches this season, but Prescott is the one Kompany will turn to if necessary.

Neuer, a World Cup winner and 12-time Bundesliga champion with Bayern, has played 19 league games this season, with the 37-year-old last appearing on March 6.

Orbig, 22, has made eight league appearances, including six starts, while Ulreich, 37, made his first appearance of the season on Saturday.

Bayern, the defending Bundesliga champion and current league leader, will face Real Madrid or Manchester City in the quarter-finals if they beat Atalanta.
