💡 Main takeaway:
Bristol center Beinhard Janse van Rensburg will be a midfield option for England from November next year after the World Rugby Union decided that a 20-minute appearance for South Africa’s Under-20s in 2016 no longer linked him to the Springboks at senior level.
The 28-year-old, who has been named in the Premier League Team of the Season for the past two seasons, signed for the London Irish in 2021 but moved to Bristol two years later when the Irish went into administration.
The Rugby Football Union’s successful appeal to World Rugby over Janse van Rensburg’s exceptional circumstances means he can qualify for England on the basis of residence after five years in the country.
Janse van Rensburg traveled to join the Baby Box as emergency injury cover at the end of their World Age Championship campaign in Manchester nine years ago, appearing as a substitute in the 49-19 defeat to Argentina at Sale Sharks.
Although he returned home the next day and did not play for them again, the South African Under-20s were selected as the “next national team”, meaning that Jans van Rensburg was committed to South Africa.
But South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus did not show much interest in calling him up.
While World Rugby’s ‘birthright’ rule allows players to move to a second country in which they or their parents or grandparents were born three years after exiting the Test arena, Janse van Rensburg has no such connection to England, leaving him with only a longer residency route to qualify.
His availability adds to an exciting array of midfield possibilities for England coach Steve Borthwick.
Northampton’s Fraser Dingwall has emerged as their first-choice inside midfielder this year, while Gloucester’s Seb Atkinson and Bath’s Max Ojomoh have made impressive first forays into the international game.
Having recovered ahead of schedule from an Achilles injury, Ollie Lawrence has been in fine form as a 13-year-old, while Joe Marchant – who was first choice out of position for the 2023 Rugby World Cup – will return to contention for selection when he moves to Sale from Stade Francais next summer.
Borthwick may also continue to experiment with playing Tommy Freeman, mostly a winger, at outside centre. Freeman started the 25-7 win over Australia in November and March’s 68-14 win over Wales in the No. 13 shirt.
A potential England debut for Jans van Rensburg, who can play inside and outside position, will be against Australia in early November 2026.
Tests against Japan and New Zealand follow on subsequent weekends as part of the New Nations Championship event.
Jans van Rensburg played for the Barbarians against second-row side New Zealand earlier this month, playing in front of 32-cap David Haveli.
