England Test captain Ben Stokes says he has undergone successful surgery on the fractured cheekbone he sustained when he was hit by the ball while training at Durham Academy.

Stokes, 34, was injured last week while working with youth in his county.

It is understood that he was hit by the ball while standing next to the net.

The all-rounder posted a photo from hospital of his swollen face on Instagram on Tuesday with the caption: “It may not look like it but the surgery was a success.”

It is not yet known when Stokes will be able to return to cricket.

He will be part of the England Lions’ coaching staff for the team’s development series against Pakistan Shaheens in the UAE next month.

England’s next Test is against New Zealand on June 4, the start of a three-match series.

Stokes has not played since the conclusion of the Ashes match in Sydney on 8 January.

He suffered an adductor muscle injury on the penultimate day of the series, which England lost 4–1, leading to significant criticism of the team’s performance, preparations and culture.
