England Test captain Ben Stokes suffered a facial injury after being hit by the ball during Durham Academy training.
Stokes, 34, returned to the UK after England’s unfortunate Ashes defeat and has been working with young people in his county.
It is understood that he was struck by a ball while standing at the net.
The all-rounder posted a photo on his Instagram story on Thursday afternoon with a bloodied cheek, large bruises and swelling around his eye.
Stokes captioned the photo, “You should see the condition of the cricket ball.”
The severity of his injuries is unclear.
Stokes has not played since the conclusion of the Ashes match in Sydney on 8 January.
He suffered an adductor muscle injury on the penultimate day of the series, which England lost 4–1, leading to significant criticism of the team’s performance, preparations and culture.
It was announced last week that Stokes will be part of the England Lions’ coaching staff for the team’s development series against Pakistan Shaheens in the United Arab Emirates next month.
