✅ Here’s what you’ll learn:
Microphones are common in most headphones and earbuds, but in gaming headsets, you’re more likely to find huge microphones sticking out of one ear. These tend to provide better sound quality, as well as some other features you may want to consider when purchasing a new headphone.
The first is a visual indicator of whether your microphone is muted or not. I know this sounds a little funny, but it serves the dual purpose of letting you know you’re being heard when you speak, as well as making sure your friends won’t hear you snacking. This could be a light, or a hinge that allows it to get out of the way, but either way, it’s a must-have for me when purchasing a headphone.
I also like to keep an eye on the side tone, or response, which is how much of what you say is fed back to the headset. Hearing a little of your own voice can help you know how loud you are speaking, especially with how good the sound insulation is on some of these headphones. Dedicated software will often let you set this, but if not, you may be stuck with the default setting.
Sound quality is somewhat important, but if you’re interested in streaming or podcasting, you’ll want to check out USB microphones. They require an additional investment and some desk space, but will provide sound closer to what you might expect from professional audio equipment.
