Upgrade your sleep experience
I just got back from a three day trip using this board for the first time in a few months. What a find, every time I sleep on this thing. I’ve been testing other platforms most of the winter. While some are very good, nothing compares to the Therm-a-rest NeoLoft for comfort. This pillow has reinvigorated my love of backpacking by ensuring I get a great night’s sleep in the countryside. It’s soft and cozy, like a luxury camping pillow in the car, with excellent pressure relief (pro tip: for maximum comfort, don’t over-inflate it). The R-4.8 insulation keeps you warm down to freezing, though I’ve used it in colder conditions by pairing it with a closed-cell foam liner. I also like that they are very small because of how bulky they are when inflated.
Lighten your load with a lightweight tent
Big Agnes Copper Spur tents are high quality, lightweight and well designed. At 2 pounds 10 ounces for the two-person model, this is one of the lightest freestanding tents on the market. It is easy to set up and stable even under strong winds. The Copper Spur is also very livable, with steep sidewalls to maximize interior space. Mesh pockets help store gear and give you a place to put headlamps for diffused light. The innovative “canopy” design makes getting in and out a breeze (provided you have the trekking poles to set up). All layers are adhered with waterproof, solvent-free polyurethane tape. They’re also durable despite their lightweight fabrics, and withstand years of abuse on the road. I recommend grabbing the Footprint ($80) to help protect your floor. It also allows you to cast just the fly, which is a nice shelter on sunny days at the beach.
Get the best lightweight backpack from REI
I tested this pack a bit last summer as part of my next ultralight backpacking guide. It’s very comfortable, and holds a 25 pound load without a problem. It’s not the lightest pack I’ve tried (it’s 1 lb. 14 oz. for the Medium), but like most REI-brand gear, it strikes a great balance between features and price. It’s made of ripstop UHMWPE nylon, with steel tubes forming the frame, making it more study than a frameless pack. I liked the pre-curved back panel and hip belt, which was more comfortable than most ultra-light framed packs in this category. It has great load lifters too, and the simple design works well to keep the weight down. My only real issue is that the outside pocket isn’t very large.
Get the best camping stove
Any flame will work, but the Coleman Cascade 3-in-1 Burner elevates your outdoor cooking experience. I lived full time in an RV for over seven years and cooked on this stove almost every day. It’s all about the cast iron grates. It is sturdier than usual metal and does not warp over time. Apply a light coat of oil to them periodically and they will develop a protective seasoning just like a cast iron skillet. The flat top is also useful for preparing camp pies for a hungry family. The coupon reduces the price here to $200.

The Mayfly Osmo Tent from Nemo Equipment is the two-person tent I use most often. It’s built tough, engineered smartly, and has proven durable and, most importantly, dry during my years of testing. I tested the Mayfly two-person model, which weighs 3 pounds, 8 ounces. A little heavier than our top pick for ultralight hiking (suggested Copper Spur above) but still very light when split between two people. It’s a semi-freestanding design, which means there are fewer poles, but you do have to keep an eye on the end of the tent. Two stitched reinforcements help ensure there’s plenty of room for your feet, but the Mayfly is on the narrow side. It fits two sleeping pads, and hikers under 6 feet 4 inches will be fine, but if you’re not close to your hiking partner, a three-person model for $375 ($125 off) would be a better option.
The Dragonfly Osmo tent is a slightly lighter tent than the Mayfly tent mentioned above, and is aimed at ultralight backpackers who want a free-standing tent. I tested and liked the one-person version, which is roomy, lightweight and sturdy. The Osmo fabric is Nemo’s proprietary blend of nylon and polyester, which in my experience sheds rain better than most nylon rain flies. The three-person version of the Dragonfly Osmo is also on sale for $435 ($145 off), and the two-person bike-packing-friendly version, with poles that fit between the handlebars, is on sale for $376 ($204 off).
This is the best value on sale on REI Members’ Day. Replacing the beloved Kingdom 6, the Wonderland 6 is a spacious family camping tent with a circular design from REI. Although I prefer the square design of the Base Camp 6, the Wonderland 6 is roomier, better ventilated, and is an overall better choice for most families. The biggest thing I miss about Wonderland is the interior dividing wall, which makes it easy to have a sleeping area and a separate area for lounging. The Wonderland 4 also retails for $257 ($172 off), but I highly recommend the two-person version because it’s about the same price and gives you a lot more living space.

The Z-Lite Sol weighs almost nothing (10 ounces for little ones), folds small enough to attach to the outside of any pack, can double as a chair, extra padding on cold nights, a table, you name it. I’m too old and too soft to be the super minimalist type who only gets a Z-Lite for sleeping, but I still have one on almost every backpacking trip I take.
Sea to Summit’s Ether Light XT is a lightweight sleeping pad that’s 4 inches thick — the ever-popular Therm-a-rest X-Lite is only 3 — making it the best ultralight option for side sleepers. I also like the barrier design better than the Therm-a-rest, and it seems to be a little more durable in my tests. Note that the XT has been replaced by a newer model, but this one is still great.
Nemo’s Forte 35 is our favorite synthetic sleeping bag. It is rated at 35 degrees (comfort rating), making it a good choice for summer. What I like most about this bag, and almost all Nemo sleeping bags, is the wider cut across the torso and down to the knees. This bag is almost a mix of a mummy bag and your dad’s square sleeping bag from the 1970s. This means that this bag is spacious.

The Arc’teryx Beta SL Rain Jacket is our favorite rain jacket. This is Arc’teryx’s lightest rain shell, but it’s also one of the few jackets that has never failed to keep me dry. It contains Gore-Tex’s latest fabric innovation, called ePE (expanded polyethylene) – a waterproof, breathable membrane laminated to a nylon face (PFC-free). The hydrostatic head (HH) rating is 28,000, which is much better than the usual 10,000 rating you find on most vests. These deals take a little bit of the sting out of the one thing I don’t like about this jacket — the price.
Patagonia’s classic rain jacket, now with a PFC-free DWR finish. I like the roomier design of the Arc’teryx Beta SL above, but this jacket is 95 percent as good and less than half the price of the Beta. It has a two-way adjustable hood, and the cuffs are equipped with Velcro to provide a nice tight seal against the rain. The only real complaint I have with this jacket is that it’s on the noisier side, but at this price, I can handle a little extra nylon wrinkling.
There are only two colors available at this price, but this is a great offering for one of the most packable synthetic puffer jackets we’ve tested. If you avoid falling, but want a light puffy jacket for three-season backpacking, or around-town wear, this jacket is worth having.

Another bargain with a limited choice of colors, but this is too good a price to pass up. The 650 Down Jacket is one of the best budget puffer jackets you can buy for three seasons, and more, at this price. At 10.9 ounces, it’s reasonably lightweight and has large hand pockets and some great interior pockets for storing a hat or gloves. The children’s version is also on sale in a beautiful yellow color that makes it easy for you to see your child in the snow.
The Patagonia Down Jacket is a much-loved classic puffer jacket. It uses 800 fill power down and limits overfill, making it a larger layer than many other products I’ve tried. It has a lot of loft, and the recycled nylon fabric still looks like it did the day you took it home (this fabric is now made from recycled fishing nets).
Nemo’s Resolve is a great package that includes a low waste footprint in the design. He uses solution-dyed fabrics and eschews straps and buckles in favor of elastic cords and pull tabs. This makes it more difficult to adjust, but once you get used to it and get the fit, it won’t be a problem. The Resolve is a convenient package. Although it’s technically frameless, it looks like it has some structure. And it sits nice and high on your back. At 1 pound 15 ounces, it’s also very light.
If you want to bring a backpacking chair, this is the place to get it. It’s the lightest on the market at 18 ounces, and it’s compact and beautiful. Nemo has also solved the main problem with all post chairs: the included base pad keeps it from sinking into the soft ground.

As with most Yeti sales, this only applies to one color, in this case the insanely bright Firefly Yellow. I can guarantee you that you will never lose it if you get this color. Yeti’s Hopper Cooler is my favorite cooler for an afternoon at the beach. It’s large enough to hold ice, drinks, and snacks for my family of five.
