Planting a garden Or laying grass in your garden is the easy part. Keeping foliage properly hydrated is the real challenge – one that continues and grows more complex as the seasons change.
In recent years, indoor smart home technology has spread outward, and you’ll now find dozens of wireless irrigation systems on the market that can take some of the confusion and complexity out of watering your plants. Whether you have a sophisticated in-ground sprinkler or drip irrigation system or you rely on an old-fashioned hose, multiple smart irrigation solutions are readily available. The good news: We’ve got you covered no matter what type of outdoor environment you have.

What can smart irrigation systems do?
Across the board, smart irrigation solutions are fundamentally designed around scheduling. Although you can always start a manual watering operation with one of these systems, their real value is in setting up a recurring schedule so you can basically forget about it. The best systems offer advanced scheduling tools that allow you to water on the days of the week or month you choose, as well as when to water and the amount of water you want delivered.
Best of all, the most sophisticated solutions include what is now known as “weather intelligence,” which is a fancy way of saying that they will scan the Internet for local weather conditions and adjust irrigation based on whether it is going to rain or freeze. Many systems will also work with wireless soil monitors to give you better control of ground moisture levels, and help you conserve as much water as possible.
What if I have an existing irrigation system?
If you already have an indoor irrigation system with a traditional timer, upgrading to a smart irrigation system is very simple. All you have to do is remove the old console and replace it with the Smart Controller, connecting the zone wires to the terminal posts inside the Smart Controller, just as they were on the old Controller, leaving the remaining infrastructure in place. (Make sure the console you purchase has enough zones to handle your infrastructure; consoles typically support either 8 or 16 zones.)

From there, you’ll use an app to configure your zones based on plant type, shade conditions, and soil type. Most apps will recommend watering intervals for each zone based on this information, and you can adjust these intervals on the fly, zone by zone. For setups that include a garden hose, configuration is easier. Smart sprinklers attach to the end of any standard hose and can be placed anywhere in your yard. Instead, smart hose timers attach to the faucet; You can then connect your sprinkler (or drip irrigation in some cases) to the timer. Mobile app features will vary, of course, but many are no less complex than permanent smart sprinkler systems.
How do I test smart irrigation systems?
I’ve been testing Smart Watering products since 2017 in yards up to 1.3 acres in both California and Texas. My current sprinkler system is an 11-zone permanent solution that includes both ground sprinklers and drip irrigation. For hose-based solutions, I test by connecting to a standard hose spigot, typically in lawn and flower bed environments.

The best smart controller for ground sprinkler systems
I’ve tested more than a dozen smart sprinkler controllers with underground irrigation systems, and this Rachio controller is the one I use every day. There’s certainly nothing special about the hardware, though it’s easy to wire the area thanks to spring-loaded clips rather than screws, and the on-board controls only cover the basics.
The real magic is in the Rachio app. Here, you can define your zones based on vegetation type, nozzle/drip type, soil type, sun exposure level, and slope. If you want to go really wild, advanced options let you adjust everything from root depth to the amount of water draining you want to allow. Assign each zone a name and photo, and they’ll all be displayed in an intuitive grid, which you can use as a point-and-click interface for manual watering operations as needed.
Rachio scheduling can be static based on day or date, or dynamic, with adjustments automatically applied based on circulating weather conditions. The app’s logging system is copious, detailing the timing and duration of each run – per zone and per day. It’s also easy to share access with my professional irrigation team, so they can periodically test areas for leaks or other issues without having to physically access my garage, where the controller lives.
Other Solid Smart Controller Picks
Irrigreen 3.0 starting at $2,089: Irrigreen is not just a controller. It is an expensive complete irrigation solution and requires new plumbing and upgrading all of your sprinkler heads to Irrigreen’s “water-coating” system. I wouldn’t remove the existing system for this, but if you’re installing sprinklers from scratch, it’s worth a solid look.
