Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm-Ligrid admitted on live television to cheating on his girlfriend moments after winning a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics.
The 28-year-old, who won his first individual Olympic medal in the 20km individual biathlon in Milan-Cortina, admitted he had an affair three months ago and described it as “my biggest mistake”.
Laegried said it had been “the worst week of my life” since he told his girlfriend six months ago about the affair.
“There’s one I wanted to share with those who might not be watching it,” he told Norwegian broadcaster NRK., external
“Six months ago I met the love of my life – the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. Three months ago I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her.
“She’s got the gold medal in life, and I’m sure there are a lot of people who would see things differently, but I only have eyes for her.
“Sports has come in second place these past few days. Yes, I wish I could share that with her.”
The seven-time world champion ranked third in biathlon – which combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting – behind Norwegian champion Johan Olav Boten and Frenchman Eric Perrault.
This is the second Olympic medal for Legrid, who won relay gold at the 2022 Olympics.
Asked about his admission at the press conference later, he added: “I don’t know if it was the right choice or not, but it was the choice I made.”
“I’ve made the decision to tell the world what I’ve done, so maybe there’s a chance to see what you really mean to me – maybe not, but I don’t want to think I haven’t tried everything to get her back.
“I don’t want to steal the spotlight. I hope this is just a day or two. Then you’re an Olympic gold medalist forever.”
