Biffy Clyro Review – The Triumphant Collection Represents a Resounding Renewal | Biffy Clyro

‘W“With a little love, we can get over it all,” Simon Neil sings in Biffy Clyro’s opening song A Little Love, over a huge, infectious rock chorus. It’s a line that sounds like a mantra for the Scottish band 30 years and 10 albums in: they’re currently touring Futique for 2025 after going through a tough period. They’ve suffered significant burnout, their first band members fell out and founding member James Johnston pulled out of this tour due to mental health and addiction issues, but their new songs seem rooted in renewal, reconnection and newfound purpose.

Futique was recorded in Berlin. The band said that the ghosts of Bowie, Iggy and Nick Cave’s birthday party “bleeded into the songs”. There are no such popular artistic appearances present tonight. Instead, there’s an exciting pop feel to these new tracks. Goodbye is a slow-burning ballad that explodes into a soaring anthem, while Shot One exemplifies the band’s knack for fusing sweet melodies and meaty rhythms – existing in the blurred middle ground between rock, pop and metal that they so comfortably own.

There’s a lot of older material too. The double violins on that golden base add a tense, wiry stab that synchronizes with the audience’s air punches. The mountains place the audience in a mass of flowing bodies and screaming lungs, while the abstract vocal delivery of the instruments slows things down to a gentle whisper.

At their most explosive, the band is brutally loud. Their ability to craft taut riffs that explode into something massive and exaggerated, as on the thunderous “Living is trouble ’cause everything dies,” is piercing and arresting. While things feel a bit familiar and repetitive over the course of its nearly two hours, Bubbles and Many of Horror’s second ending is a powerful and triumphant note. Huge confetti cannons explode as the band and audience proudly shout in unison: “We’re Biffy fucking Clyro!” They then leave the theater having successfully invaded Nottingham.
