Forget moving billboards, Graeme Souness has brought the actual touchlines.

In September 1987, during his spell as Rangers manager, the Scot decided he needed to crack down after his side lost 1-0 to Dynamo Kyiv in the first leg of their European Cup first round tie.

Souness, who has never been shy about tackling during his glittering playing career, believed a physical approach could be the way to beat the Ukrainian side at Ibrox.

What better way to make it a physical game than by making the field smaller and denser?

“At that time, the width of the pitch did not have to be fixed as long as it was above a certain minimum. So I made it the absolute minimum,” Souness told FourFourTwo.

Not only that, he waited until the Kiev players trained on the usual sized pitch before changing the dimensions on match day.

“It wasn’t perfect, but it was within the rules,” Souness added.

Rangers won 2-0 to advance and the rules were later changed to prevent a repeat. Clubs must now announce the size of their stadium before the start of the new season.
