Boxing: Emanuel Navarrete stops Eduardo Nunez to unify the IBF and WBO super featherweight titles

Mexican Emanuel Navarrete stopped compatriot Eduardo Nunez in a dominant display to unify the IBF and WBO super-featherweight titles.

After outpointing Nunes for most of the contest, Navarrete, 31, added his IBF title to his WBO title when the ringside doctor stopped the bout before the 11th round.

The victory at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona was the 40th of Navarrete’s 43-fight career, and ended Nunes’ 19-fight winning streak.

“It’s hard to see your opponent hurting out there, but it’s also hard to not keep going and keep going to win the fight,” Navarrete said.

“You never know what might happen in those final rounds. He could catch you with a bullet and it could be over. So I needed to keep doing my job.”

Navarrete dominated the early rounds before landing some damaging shots in the ninth, forcing the doctor to take a look at Nunez for the first time.

After another dominant display from three-weight world champion Navarrete in the 10th round, Nunez was deemed unable to continue after his face was bloodied and his right eye was badly swollen.

WBC super featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster and WBA titleholder Lamont Roach are potential options for Navarrete to face next.
