British boxer Lawrence Okolie failed a drug test ahead of his scheduled heavyweight bout against Tony Yoka this weekend, which has been cancelled.
The 33-year-old was scheduled to face France’s Yoka, the 2016 Olympic champion, in Paris on Saturday, April 25.
Wrestling promoter Queensberry said it was informed by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (FADA) on Monday night that Okolie “returned a negative result following an anti-doping test conducted prior to the show in Paris on Saturday.”
Fight Night was canceled after Okolie was removed from the main bout, with Queensberry citing “circumstances beyond our control.”
Former world champion Okolie earlier said he hoped “sense” would prevail as he explained that the failed test came after treatment for an injury.
“Before anyone starts imagining the worst, after my biceps injury last year, I suffered an elbow injury in the same arm during this camp,” Okolie said in a statement posted on social media.
“I went through treatment and now here we are. I really hope common sense prevails.
He added: “Of course, I will cooperate fully with all relevant authorities, and I am confident that any investigation will clear my name.”
Okolie won a world title at cruiserweight before moving up to heavyweight in 2024.
He is undefeated in three fights at heavyweight and stopped Ebenezer Tetteh last December in his last outing.
