Bradford City have condemned the “abhorrent” racist abuse directed at defender Curtis Tilt after the match away to Huddersfield Town.
The club says the 34-year-old was targeted by a fan at his end of the pitch when he left the field at the end of the 1-0 defeat at Acho Stadium.
West Yorkshire Police said the referee had reported the incident and an investigation had begun.
The police said: “We are investigating a public order crime of a racist nature, and investigations are continuing with both clubs to determine the identity of the person involved.”
Bradford City said in a statement that it would “cooperate fully” with all investigations and provide support to Tilt who was “allegedly subjected to abhorrent discrimination”.
They added: “The club condemns all racist abuse in the strongest possible way.”
Huddersfield Town also issued a statement saying they were aware of the alleged incident and would assist the authorities and officials involved.
The club added: “We reiterate in the strongest possible terms that Huddersfield Town does not tolerate discrimination or anti-social behavior of any kind.”
Tailt, a Jamaican international, joined Bradford City from Salford City on a two-year deal in June.
He has also played for Blackpool, Rotherham and Wigan.
