Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz reunite in new Mummy movie – Reports | film

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will reunite in a new Mummy film, the fourth film in the series of films featuring Fraser as adventurer Rick O’Connell that is part of what has become known as Universal Studio’s Monsters franchise.

According to Deadline, Fraser and Weisz are preparing to return to an as-yet-untitled project, to be helmed by horror-comedy specialists Matt Bettinelli Olpin and Tyler Gillette, best known for Radio Silence, who previously directed Ready or Not, Abigail and two installments in the Scream series, Scream and Scream VI.

In the first two films in the series, 1999’s The Mummy and 2001’s The Mummy Returns, treasure hunter Fraser O’Connell meets and then marries Wise Egyptology researcher Evelyn Carnahan while battling an ancient curse and the resurrected corpse of the priest Imhotep, played by Arnold Vosloo. Both directed by Stephen Sommers, the second film also marked the debut of Dwayne Johnson as the second villain, the Scorpion King; The character has received his own set of spin-off films, five of which have been produced to date, although only the first film, 2002’s The Scorpion King, featured Johnson.

Maria Bello replaced Weisz in the role of Carnahan in the third Mummy film, The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, released in 2008, while the “reboot” Mummy film, directed by Alex Kurtzman and starring Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis, was released in 2017 as the beginning of Universal’s so-called Dark Universe; But poor box office returns and negative reviews led the studio to abandon plans to continue the series.

The unexpected success of the first 25th anniversary re-release of The Mummy saw it break into the top 20 at the North American box office in April 2024. Meanwhile, Fraser is poised for a major career comeback thanks to his Oscar-winning performance in The Whale.
