Brennan Johnson: Craig Bellamy steps back forward to make his mark under Tottenham manager Thomas Frank

Johnson was Tottenham’s top scorer in the 2024-25 season, scoring 18 goals including the winner as the London club beat Manchester United in the Europa League final.

But he found himself struggling to play under Frank, who took over from the sacked Ange Postecoglou last June.

Johnson will make his fifth Premier League start this season as Tottenham host Manchester United on Saturday, after boosting his chances with a goal in a 4-0 win over Copenhagen in the Champions League on Tuesday.

But Johnson then made himself a potential subject of a quiz question by sending him off, as he became the first British player to score and receive a red card in Europe’s top club tournament.

“It’s been a change for him with a new coach coming in,” said Bellamy, who is preparing for two World Cup qualifiers in November against Liechtenstein and North Macedonia.

“Last season was not a great season for Tottenham, but he excelled in certain parts and his numbers and goals were exceptional.

“I’ve been there myself and it’s difficult when someone new comes in and you see one or two other players coming in. So I feel like he’s adapting to it and the new manager is adapting to it as well.

“I always believe quality will shine through and for Brennan I’m sure that will be the case.”

Wales goes to Liechtenstein on November 15 and hosts North Macedonia three days later.

Wales are three points behind North Macedonia, who are second in Group J, although Bellamy’s side have a game in hand.

After securing a place in the UEFA Nations League World Cup qualifiers last March, Wales will have a semi-final play-off at home if they can finish second in the group.
