Switzerland reached their first United Cup final, beating Belgium 2-1 in Sydney.
It will face Poland in the final of the mixed tournament after Belinda Bencic and Jakub Boll defeated Elise Mertens and Zizo Burgess 6-3, 0-6, 10-5 after a tie-break at Ken Rosewall Arena.
Bencic, who beat Mertens in a thrilling three-set singles match earlier, has won all eight of her matches in United’s Cup history.
“I feel like 170 kilograms have fallen off my shoulders,” she said.
“I was very nervous. I really wanted to do well and today I felt a lot of pressure not to let my team down.”
On the other hand, Poland defeated the defending champions, the United States, 2-1, in the semi-finals, to reach the final for the third time in a row.
American Coco Gauff, ranked fourth in the world, defeated second-seeded Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-2, to tie the score at 1-1, after fellow American Taylor Fritz was defeated 6-7 (1-7), 6-7 (2-7) by Hubert Hurkacz in men’s singles.
French Open champion Gauff (21 years old) partnered with Christian Harrison in mixed doubles, but lost to Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski 6-7 (5-7) and 6-7 (3-7) in the early hours of the morning.
