Northern Irishman William Creighton has won the British Rally Championship title for the first time.

Creighton and co-driver Liam Regan finished fourth in the Cambrian Rally to comfortably take first place.

The 27-year-old Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy driver needed to finish at least eighth to win the title and was duly obligated to drive safely in his Toyota GR Yaris.

It was a stark contrast in Creighton’s emotions compared to 12 months ago, when he narrowly missed out on the BRC title to Chris Ingram in the final round of the season.

This is the latest success in Creighton’s growing career, with the BRC title coming after victories in the World Junior Championship and the British Rally Championship.

Creighton and Regan won the opening round of the season with a dominant victory on the Eastern Riding stages, and after finishing second in the Carlisle stages, stormed to victory on the Grampian Forest Rally to take control of the title battle.

The crew finished third in the BRC at Rally Ceredigion in September, which was also held as part of the European Rally Championship.

His latest victory places Creighton on a list of BRC champions including rally legend Colin McRae and current World Rally Championship points leader Elfyn Evans.

The race was won by Max McRae, nephew of the late McRae. Creighton’s title rivals Romit Jorgensen and Merion Evans, who needed a win in Wales, finished second and third.

There was also Irish success in the Junior BRC with Donegal’s Kyle McBride taking the title by winning his class in the Cambrian for the fourth time in six events.
