Britney Spears entered rehab after being arrested last March for driving under the influence.

Police arrested the pop singer in Ventura County, California, after she was driving recklessly, and it was found that she had drugs and alcohol in her system. She was briefly detained, and her manager called Spears’ actions “completely inexcusable. Britney will take the right steps and abide by the law, and we hope this is the first step in the long-overdue change that needs to happen in Britney’s life.”

Spears has now voluntarily begun treatment at a rehabilitation center, the singer’s representative confirmed.

Following her career as one of the most important pop artists in US history, Spears has spent some time away from music: her last album was released in 2016 and her last chart appearance was in 2022, when she returned to the top 10 in the US and UK with Hold Me Closer, a collaboration with Elton John.

In 2024, she said “I will never go back to the music industry” and that she would prefer to ghostwrite other artists, and in January she said she would never perform again in the United States although she hopes to perform in the United Kingdom and Australia. She sold her song catalog in late 2025 to Primary Wave for $200 million.

In 2023, she published The Woman in Me, a hugely successful memoir now in development for a big-screen adaptation with Wicked director Jon M. Chu and La La Land producer Marc Platt.

In 2008, Spears was placed in a conservatorship arrangement following her mental health breakdown, which lasted until 2021. Spears’ independence was curtailed due to the controversial arrangement, including restrictions on her spending, diet, and more.
