Brooks Koepka’s comeback: ‘I called Tiger Woods first,’ says golfer on PGA Tour comeback

American Woods is a 15-time major winner and chair of the PGA Tour’s Futures Committee.

“I didn’t know,” Koepka added [the new PGA Tour commissioner] Brian [Rolapp]Obviously I didn’t have a relationship with him just because he’s so new and gay [Monahan, the previous incumbent] That will be the next call.

“I felt like Tiger was someone I had relied on in the past for questions and answers and how to approach things, and I felt like that was probably the most comfortable connection for me.”

Married with a young son, the three-time PGA Championship winner and two-time US Open champion said he was leaving LIV Golf to prioritize his “family’s needs.”

“I don’t regret anything I’ve done,” added the Florida-born Koepka, who won nine PGA Tour tournaments during his nine seasons on North America’s elite professional circuit.

“I learned a lot. I always enjoyed the ride no matter where I was.”

Speaking about his return to Torrey Pines in California, he said: “I’m probably a little nervous about that as well, just to see, I guess, how the fans respond to that.

“I hope they’re excited. I hope they’re happy to have me here. You know, I hope it’s, at least like the conversations I’ve had with the players, that they’re excited to have me back and happy to see me play.”

Rory McIlroy recently suggested that Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour could mean the competitive LIV Golf Tour was in decline.

But the Northern Irishman has now added that the decision could also have been driven by the level of competition.

“He’s obviously a very competitive person who wants to compete at the highest level,” McIlroy, 36, said.

“I think he made the decision that he thought competing at the highest level meant returning to the PGA Tour.

“It seems like some of these guys [on the LIV tour] “Maybe they’re starting to realize that they didn’t get everything they wanted out of going there, and obviously that’s a great thing for the PGA Tour.”
