Williamson, 34, became a two-weight British champion after also winning the belt at light middleweight – putting a run of results behind him with three defeats in his past five fights.
Meanwhile, Simpson suffered his first professional defeat in 19 fights and after a raucous crowd sang “Yorkshire, Yorkshire, Yorkshire” to him for most of the night, he quickly jumped on the microphone to calm potential trouble in the crowd.
The Barnsley native sells most of his tickets in person among his fans and pays tribute to them after the loss.
Simpson was ahead on the judges’ scorecards when he was stopped in 10th place.
“I thought I won most of the rounds. It was always a tough fight with Troy and I had a very good shot,” he said.
“I want to thank everyone who came tonight and is still here now.
“I was just frustrated and everyone here was still chanting my name. I will never forget it.
“We have a rematch. I’m going to get back to work, come back and fix this. Thank you for sticking with me. I’ll be back.”
There could be a rematch in 2026, and Williamson said he welcomed “all comers” in the new year.
“This is for my baby boy at home,” Williamson said.
“He comes up to me every day and says ‘And what’s new…’ and I don’t even need to tell him.
“I promised him that I would return the belts to him at the hotel tonight and I am very happy.”
Williamson added: “This fight has changed my life. I have always wanted my children to have a better upbringing than the one I had.”
“I deserved it tonight with the performance of a lifetime. You changed my life and the lives of my children for the better.”
