Meanwhile, Welbeck is enjoying a renaissance at Brighton and manager Fabian Horzler summed up the striker’s performance perfectly after the win over Brentford.

“It’s like a good red wine,” Horzler told the BBC.

“The bigger he gets, the better he gets, and we are very happy to have him on our team as a leader, as a player, as a personality.”

Welbeck is the top scorer in the Premier League this season with seven goals, followed by Wilson and Burnley’s Jadon Anthony with four goals.

Injuries disrupted Welbeck’s career and prevented him from adding more to the 42 international matches he played with the England national team, scoring 16 goals, and his last appearance was in September 2018.

“Unfortunately for me during my career, I’ve had some horrific injuries and things that have kept me out for a long time,” Welbeck told Sky Sports.

“I’m happy to be on the field, enjoying football and keeping fit.”

His strong start to the season has prompted former players, including Wayne Rooney, to suggest that Tuchel should consider calling him up for England’s World Cup qualifiers in November.

Welbeck was not included in the squad that played the matches against Serbia and Albania, but the Brighton striker says he is not thinking about the World Cup at the moment.

“I’ve always stayed pretty high and never too low,” he told Sky Sports.

“I always go with the flow and make sure I’m prepared because football can change in an instant.

“I take it game by game, week by week – [I turn] 35 this week on Wednesday but I feel great. I hope they sing me a little song and that’s all I need at 35!”

With Tuchel stating that he will contact every player on England’s long list to make plans to improve their chances of reaching the World Cup, both Welbeck and Wilson hope they have a realistic route back into the international squad.
