This is the question that few people have found an answer to: how to stop Arsenal Scoring from corner kicks?

The Gunners have scored 16 goals from corner kicks this season – already the most goals in a single Premier League season – as they continue to lead the title race.

But a solution may have been found by Kidderminster Harriers in the National League North, the sixth tier of English football.

Chelsea raised some eyebrows by leaving three in front when defending Arsenal’s corner kicks in the Carabao Cup semi-final. Kidderminster has raised the stakes even further.

In the 89th minute against an air-dominant Alfreton side this month, Kidderminster opted to leave five players up front when defending a corner kick – and it paid off in style as they raced home to score the decisive winner.

Manager Adam Murray used the high-risk approach again in Tuesday’s 4-0 win over Peterborough Sports, and hinted they could take it further.

He told BBC Hereford and Worcester: “A big part of the reason is why aren’t we doing it?

“When you look at defensive set pieces – even at the highest level – clubs try to create that chaos there.

“When you look at some of the opponents and set-pieces are their main strength, how can we get players out of there?

“Can we take the opponent’s attacking set pieces and turn them into attacking set pieces for us? You have to take a bit of risk.

“Sometimes you have to think outside the box. I’ve thought about it for a long time. You can find yourself in that category where you do things because they’ve always done them.”

“It will be more interesting when we leave seven.”

Former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given suggested earlier this season that keeping players up while defending corner kicks could be an effective way to counter Arsenal’s threat.

He said on BBC Match of the Day: “If they leave three players, Arsenal has to leave at least three players, and maybe four players again.

“This leaves a lot more space for the defenders and the goalkeeper.

“Yes, it leaves more space for the attackers as well, but all these numbers have caused a lot of confusion.”

Monaco and Crystal Palace also left two players in the match against Arsenal, but leaving five players in attack takes it to the next level.

Can it continue?
