Wolves only picked up three points at the start of the year, but has Edwards given them hope, unlikely as it may be?

He lost his first eight matches after replacing Vitor Pereira in November, and picked up the first point in a draw with Manchester United in December.

Since then, including the result at Old Trafford, Wolves have picked up 13 points in 12 games.

It’s not enough to put them anywhere near safety given the gap – which rose to 16 points at one stage – but 13 points is the same tally as Brighton and Newcastle in that time, and two points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Wolverhampton ranks 12th in the standings over the past five matches and 15th over the last 10 matches.

They have lost five of their last 15 games in all competitions, a huge improvement after losing 17 of their first 21 games this season.

In Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Liverpool, they restricted the struggling champions to 0.62xG (expected goals).

Only leaders Arsenal have managed to limit Liverpool’s chances in open play, with 0.28 xG in the Reds’ last 16 matches.

Liverpool took revenge with a 3-1 win on Friday in the FA Cup.

Their running statistics have also improved significantly and Wolves have outperformed Liverpool, Chelsea, United, Everton, West Ham, Forest and Villa since the change in management.

Previously, they had only managed this twice, including running just 180 meters more than Brighton during a 1-1 draw in October.

The team covered 113,508 meters in this month’s home win over Villa, the fifth-highest distance of the season, having covered 114,427 meters from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Arsenal at Molineux.

That was their second-highest mark of the season, and collectively they averaged a rise of 7.8k – about an hour for a midfielder – under Edwards.

With the former Middlesbrough boss abandoning their promotion campaign due to a relegation battle, Wolves are now also committing the most fouls in the league per game, having previously been in the bottom two.

“We have a minimum, which is non-negotiable,” Edwards said. “Sprint recovery, work ethic, sparring. Sprint effort is now night and day.

“We control these things. We can’t always promise that we’ll be great on the ball – we might make mistakes – but what we can control is how hard we run and work.

“Those things are why we’ve been more competitive over the last 15 games or so.”
