✅ Key idea:

O’Neill last managed in 2019 during a short spell at Nottingham Forest after his spell as Republic of Ireland coach ended the previous year.

His spell at Celtic was special for the club’s fans, with few managers in the club’s history being so highly regarded.

He won three league titles, three Scottish Cups and a Scottish League Cup and led Celtic to the UEFA Cup Final.

O’Neill, who has brought in Sean Maloney to help him, said: “It’s a short term. Celtic were probably surprised by the news of Brendan’s departure. They are obviously looking for a permanent manager, so he is suitable in the short term.”

“Interim means temporary. It’s that simple. I assume Celtic are looking for a young manager with proven ability. We want to move the club forward now.

“Naturally, I had a fantastic time at Celtic, it was a privilege. I can’t stress it enough, it’s a short time until a permanent manager is appointed. I’ll just keep the seat warm.

“I might call Henrik Larsson [star striker when he was at Celtic] And ask him if he stays at the gym.”

The Scottish Premiership champions are eight points behind early leaders Heart of Midlothian after losing 3-1 at Tynecastle on Sunday.

Celtic also had a mediocre European campaign and a disappointing transfer window.

In a stunning message to fans, Desmond challenged Rodgers’ assertion that he had not been formally offered a contract extension, denied imposing signings on the manager, and criticized his “desire to preserve himself at the expense of others”.

“Indeed, he had the final say on all football matters and was constantly supported in the recruitment process, including the record investment in players he personally identified and approved.”

“Unfortunately, his words and actions since then have been divisive, misleading and self-serving. They have contributed to a toxic atmosphere around the club and fueled hostility towards members of the executive team and the board.”

“What has failed in recent times has not been due to our structure or model, but to the desire of one individual for self-preservation at the expense of others.”

Rodgers has been contacted for comment.
