Champions League: Can January signings play in the competition?

Players signed in the January transfer window will not be available to play in the Champions League until after the league stage of the competition.

Clubs can register a maximum of three new players into their squad once the league stage has concluded by the deadline on Thursday 5 February.

The same rules also apply in the Europa League and Conference League.

The teams competing in the Champions League still have two matches remaining in the league stage before the knockout rounds begin in February.

This means that Manchester City will be without Antoine Semenyo Mark Guehi is on Tuesday’s trip to Bodo/Glimt and their final match in the league stage is against the Turkish team Galatasaray.

New Tottenham addition Conor Gallagher will also not be available for Thomas Frank against Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt.

However, City’s Max Allen will be eligible to play in the competition, despite being recalled from a loan spell at Watford in January.

Champions League clubs must register an ‘A’ list of 25 first-team players and at least eight ‘locally trained players’ before the start of the league stage.

However, Allen is eligible for List B, a minor league squad made up of youth players born after January 1, 2004.

He meets the criteria because he is 20 years old and has spent three consecutive years at City with a maximum of one loan move within his association of no more than one year.

UEFA phased out the Champions League cup tie rule ahead of the 2018-19 season, allowing players to feature for two different teams in the competition in the same season.

Paris Saint-Germain signed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from his European compatriot Napoli last January, and the Georgian winger helped the Parisian team win the championship for the first time.
