The six Premier League teams participating in the Champions League received a major financial windfall by exiting the league stage of the competition.
Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester City have reserved their places in the round of 16, while Newcastle faces Karabakh in the playoffs after missing the quarter-finals.
The total prize money for the Champions League is around £3.8 billion, with each club participating in the league stage receiving £16.1 million for participating.
Clubs receive an additional £1.8m per win and £600,000 per draw.
There is also an additional financial incentive with each position in the table worth an additional £240,000. So, the 36th-placed team gets £240,000, the 35th-placed team gets £480,000 and the 36th-placed team gets the maximum amount of £8.6m.
The teams finishing first to eighth also receive a bonus of £1.7m, while the teams finishing ninth to 16th will receive £870,000. The eight teams through to the last 16 also receive £9.5m.
Clubs are also getting extra money from broadcast revenue after UEFA introduced a “value pillar” that splits profits. This increases again depending on the league finishes.
The increase in funds comes at a time of increasing financial inequality in the game, with 15 Premier League clubs in the top 30 in Deloitte’s Football Financials table.
