The quarter-finals, or elimination round, will feature two-legged ties, with 5th hosting 8th and 6th at home versus 7th.
In the home-and-away semifinals, third place will face the lowest-ranked team, while fourth will face the highest-ranked team.
The final will be held at Wembley at the end of May.
The change has been approved by the EFL Board and the Football Association.
It requires a majority of clubs in the Premier League (at least 37 out of 72) and also in the Championship (at least 13 out of 24) to vote in favor of the change at an extraordinary general meeting.
The championship has what can be described as the main stake in any vote to change the regulations.
If passed, the new playoff system will be implemented for the 2026-2027 season.
It is seen as giving greater opportunities to clubs with fewer resources, perhaps without umbrella payments, to compete for promotion to the Premier League.
At the moment, there are no plans to expand the playoffs into League One or League Two, but their success will be evaluated.
Four teams are currently relegated from the first division. Because of this, seventh place in League Two earns a place in the play-off.
The EFL will also discuss proposals to change promotion and relegation to three up, three down between League Two and the National League.
At the moment, two teams have been relegated, while only the National League champions are guaranteed a place in the Premier League. The second place is filled through a qualifying system.
However, there is no vote scheduled to change it.
