Chelsea lost their highest level in the league by 17 points from winning positions at home and 19 points overall, which is the second worst record in the English Premier League behind West Ham with 20 points.
It’s another area affected not only by red cards, but also by an inability to finish and defensive lapses, especially from set-pieces.
Chelsea have conceded a league-high expected 13.54 goals from set-pieces this season, resulting in them conceding 11 goals.
So, it’s no surprise that the combination of dead-ball specialist Ward Prowse and an aerial presence like Fleming contributed to the equaliser.
Rosenior said: “Set-kicks are huge in the Premier League, they are very important. Our record this season, in defending set-pieces, is not at the level required for us to achieve what we want to achieve, and that is something I need to address.”
There may also be a wider mental issue, which can again be linked to the youth of the team – particularly within Chelsea’s leadership group.
Asked if Chelsea had enough leaders, Rosenior simply replied: “Yes,” before adding: “I think there are certain values you have to have in your team.
“The best teams, the teams that win titles – which is where we want to get to – win games 1-0 when they probably haven’t played at their best.
“It should have been at least 1-0 today. Even with 10 players for 25 minutes, it should have been at least 1-0. I know what we need to get there. It’s not about youth, it’s about evaluating players and identifying players you can rely on in difficult moments.”
Chelsea were booed throughout, and Rosenior’s reaction may signal the end of a short period of calm around Stamford Bridge.
This remains a promising start for the English coach in his 11 matches, but he enters a club already suffering from a febrile atmosphere, with anti-monarchy chants increasing and fringe protests beginning to move into the mainstream.
It’s shaping up to be an interesting few weeks for Chelsea, with Arsenal, Aston Villa and Newcastle all set to face a tougher series of Premier League matches.
