The Chelsea coach said he was confident that Palmer, who scored 15 goals in the Premier League last season, would not need surgery.
“We’re trying to protect Cole as much as we can,” Mariska said. “The most important thing is that when he comes back, he will be completely ready.
“The medical staff are not magicians. Hopefully six weeks will be enough. We need to see it step by step. Sure, he will be fine.
“He looks comfortable. He has tried to recover from the injury and is doing all the treatment.”
Speaking before his side continue their Premier League campaign away to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Maresca admitted Palmer would be a big loss.
He said: “Replacing Cole is difficult, because Cole is a very important player for us – probably one of the best players in the Premier League – so replacing this type of player is always difficult.”
“We don’t have another player like Cole, because Cole is unique.”
Palmer will miss the Premier League matches against Sunderland, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Burnley and Arsenal, and will also miss the League Cup match against Wolverhampton.
The six-week recovery estimate will also rule Palmer out of Champions League matches against Ajax, Karabakh and Barcelona, while ruling him out of England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania.
