Chelsea Serie A has urged fans traveling to Naples for Wednesday’s Champions League match to “exercise extreme caution” after two fans required hospital treatment.
The Italian city has a long history of instances of visiting fans being targeted by Napoli ultras.
A Chelsea statement said: “The club is aware of the incident that occurred in Naples.”
“Two fans are being treated in hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries. The club would like to remind all fans to exercise extreme caution while in the city and heed the advice shared ahead of this match.”
Fans on social media claimed that Chelsea fans had been stabbed, but there has been no official confirmation of how the injuries occurred.
About 2,500 Chelsea fans are holding tickets for the match, with fans urged to meet in designated areas so they can get to the stadium by shuttle bus under police escort.
In travel advice issued to fans earlier this month, Chelsea said: “During UEFA competition matches, attacks on away fans have occasionally occurred in Naples.”
Fans have been urged not to wander around the city and to avoid wearing club colors or logos that identify them as Chelsea fans.
Liam Rosenior’s side need to beat Napoli at the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona to qualify directly for the last 16 of the Champions League.
Their hosts – last season’s Italian League champions – are seeking victory to remain in the competition.
