📌 **What You’ll Learn**:

Chelsea have been handed a nine-month transfer ban and a £750,000 fine over the registration of academy players between 2019 and 2022.

But compare this case with Everton and Nottingham Forest in 2024, when both clubs received points deductions for PSR breaches which seem far less serious.

So what, if any, does all of this have to do with the Premier League’s other major disciplinary case?

Fifteen months after the end of an independent panel’s hearing into more than 100 alleged breaches of financial rules by Manchester City, the club is still waiting to discover its fate.

Unlike Chelsea, City denies any wrongdoing and is appealing the case. Unlike Stamford Bridge, there has been no change in ownership at Etihad Stadium to provide mitigation.

But City fans will certainly be encouraged that the Premier League board did not even consider a points deduction in Chelsea’s case, despite the “deception and concealment”. In fact, it cited a two-window transfer ban as an “appropriate” punishment, had the club not self-reported and co-operated.

In July 2023, UEFA fined the club £8 million over the same issue. The FA is expected to take similar action when it announces the end of its disciplinary procedures in this case in the coming weeks.

But there are clear signs that Chelsea feared worse. In 2024, it was revealed that owners Todd Bohli and Behdad Eghbali had withheld £150 million of the club’s purchase price to cover potential fines related to the Abramovich era. This episode has so far cost the club around £18 million.

Some of their competitors may feel that the cost may have been greater in the form of prizes and prize money that they could have won. And also for the integrity and credibility of the competition, which depends on everyone’s adherence to the rules.
