According to Erin Mirani, Hatch’s vice president of marketing, this series of events was not, in fact, a planned marketing ploy, and Hatch is still discovering the ramifications of the Satanic rhetoric. While Mirani is happy that the ads and programs “caught people’s attention,” she wants to make it clear that they’re all meant to be fun, and she’s been pleased by the number of users who have been quick to defend Hatch.

“We saw a lot of community members jumping into the comments and saying, ‘Wait a minute, we missed the plot here!’” she says. “This is a Halloween-themed ad about how their product for adults — not kids — is actually the thing that’s going to save you from real evil: your phone. Your phone is actually keeping you up at night.'” To be clear, Hatch makes two devices, one for kids and one for adults. Any pop culture references, e.g twilight, Exclusive to adults only via Hatch’s Restore 2 and 3 devices – not accessible on Hatch Baby.

Then a new trending topic appeared about 48 hours later: “If you’re going to get rid of your Hatch, send it to me.”

Hatch took it and ran with it. “We used community signals and kind of rode that wave with the idea of, ‘Hey, we know this is going on, and we wanted to address this while also pointing out to have some fun with it,’” Mirani says.

Enter Hatch’s new “Repossession Program.” “We saw this explosion of people who wanted to ‘reclaim theirs,’ so we were able to direct people to our refurbishment program, so we could keep these appliances out of landfills and send ‘recovered’ units out,” Mirani says.

So far, Hatch has received more than 10,000 inquiries on social media about receiving “returned Hatch devices,” and only 10 requests to return Hatch devices to the company.
