The Indian city of Amdavad has pledged to “lay the foundation for the next 100 years” after it was confirmed to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030 amid a riot of color and noise in Glasgow.
The city in the west of the world’s most populous country was approved to host the tournament on Wednesday, after the Commonwealth Sports Federation’s evaluation committee proposed it last month in preference to Abuja in Nigeria.
In doing so, it has been revealed that 15-17 sports will feature at the second Games to be held in India – an increase from the 10 scheduled for next summer’s reimagined event in Glasgow, but down from the 19 sports in Birmingham in 2022.
It will join athletics, swimming, table tennis, bowling and weightlifting – in addition to the equivalent sports for people with special needs – artistic gymnastics, netball and boxing, with the process of completing the remainder of the program starting in December.
The following sports include: archery, badminton, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, T20 cricket, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby sevens, shooting, squash, triathlon and wrestling.
Amdavad can also propose up to two new or traditional sports for the event, which it will host in October 2030 to take weather considerations into account.
