India is scheduled to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, the second time in 20 years that the event will be held in the world’s most populous country.

The western city of Ahmedabad was chosen ahead of Abuja in Nigeria by a Commonwealth Sports Authority evaluation panel.

The decision to hold the Games there within five years is now expected to be ratified at the organisation’s General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26.

Ahmedabad can boast the Narendra Modi Stadium – the largest in the world, with a capacity of 132,000 – which hosted the Cricket World Cup final in 2023.

The city has a population of over five million people and has been suggested as a potential candidate to host the future Olympic Games.

“We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth,” said Dr PT Usha, President, Commonwealth Games Association of India.

The Games visited India for the first time in 2010 when they were hosted by Delhi.

This is the second time that Abuja has failed to host the Commonwealth, after being overlooked in the 2014 edition in favor of Glasgow.

It also means that Africa’s wait to hold the event for the first time will continue.

This news appears to put an end to fears that Glasgow 2026 will be the last Games ever, with Scotland’s largest city stepping in after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew for financial reasons.

This came after Birmingham hosted the 2022 tournament after the city of Durban, South Africa, withdrew.

However, the reimagined format – with fewer sports, athletes and venues – has reduced cost and enticed India, Nigeria and a handful of other nations to put in their bids to welcome the Commonwealth’s 74 sporting nations and territories.

A Commonwealth Sport statement said they “assessed the nominated cities against a wide range of criteria including technical delivery, athlete experience, infrastructure, governance and alignment with the values of Commonwealth Sport”.

“The Commonwealth Sports Executive Board has agreed to develop a strategy to support and accelerate Nigeria’s ambitions to host future Games, including consideration of 2034,” he added.

The 2030 Games mark the centenary of the inaugural event held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930.
