Conor Gallagher: Tottenham sign England midfielder from Atletico Madrid for £35m

Gallagher played 22 international matches with the England national team, but he played only once under the leadership of current coach Thomas Tuchel, and he participated for 59 minutes in the friendly match that ended in a 3-1 defeat against Senegal.

He will be hoping to return to the Premier League and impressing in Thomas Frank’s squad will boost his chances of being named to England’s World Cup squad this summer.

Gallagher was an unused member of the squad for the 2022 tournament, but made five appearances during the Euro 2024 campaign, as the Three Lions lost in the final to Spain.

Tottenham were looking to add more to their midfield options after Rodrigo Bentancur was ruled out for at least three months.

The Uruguayan international needs surgery after suffering a hamstring injury during the 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth in the English Premier League last week.

Tottenham ranks 14th in the standings with 27 points from 21 matches, and is going through a bad period, winning only once in the last six league matches.

They remain in contention for automatic qualification to the Champions League knockout stage, with Tottenham currently 11th in the standings, but were beaten by Villa in the third round of the FA Cup last Saturday – their seventh defeat in 13 matches across all competitions.

They will host struggling West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday (15:00 GMT).

Gallagher began his career at Chelsea as a youth player in 2006 and during his professional career there he had loan spells at Charlton, Swansea, West Bromwich and Crystal Palace.

He made 136 appearances in the Premier League – for Chelsea, West Brom and Palace – before joining La Liga side Atletico, whom he represented 77 times in all competitions, scoring seven goals.
